Nursing / Residential Care

 

Residential care – permanent or on a trial basis.

 

Dial House is a Registered Nursing and Residential Care Home, providing care to people over the age of 40. Established for more than 60 years it prides itself on its quality of care. In 2000 it moved to Dynevor Road from Park Avenue in Bedford, and has recently undergone extensive re-decoration and refurbishment. The surroundings are light and spacious and comfortable and the emphasis on friendliness coupled with efficiency.

 

There are several lounges allowing residents their choice of where they wish to spend their time, whether it is in the communal areas or in their own rooms. Most of the rooms are single, many with en-suite, although there are some double rooms if preferred. Residents are encouraged to bring personal possessions and to decorate their rooms as they wish. There is a facility for private telephone lines if desired. All rooms have a remote controlled colour T.V. if required, and radio controlled nurse call system. There are several bathrooms some with Parker baths and a Jacuzzi. All baths have a hoist facility.

 

Dial House Garden
The gardens are large, private and sunny with a patio and a terrace as well as lawns and all residents are encouraged to make full use of them. All Gardens are easily accessible to ensure the residents are able to enjoy them.

 

We also have a cat and a regular PAT dog visits.

 

The Matron heads a staff team of over 60, which 15 are trained nurses, the remainder are Care Assistants and Ancillary staff. Several of the staff have many years' service, and are all very experienced. All staff are fully trained with periodic update sessions, by our in-house trainers and NVQ assessors. All the staff endeavor to give the residents the best possible care with dignity and kindness.

 

Dial House Garden
Every attempt at mental stimulation is made and occupational therapy is standard. There are two full time activity officers who regularly take patients out on outings, either in a group or individually. As we have our own ambulance transport is not a problem. There is also an extensive program of activities and entertainments for all our residents, even those who are unable to leave their rooms. Physiotherapy is available via the N.H.S. and all patients are encouraged to maintain and extend their independence. There is a library service with a variety of books and tapes, and entertainers visit frequently.

 

There are no fixed visiting hours and visitors are encouraged to visit freely, and take their relatives out wherever possible. There is a supply of wheelchairs available to facilitate this.

 

Bed times are variable according to the residents wishes, as is the time that they rise.

 

Nursing Care

Dial House has an excellent reputation for the quality of the nursing care it provides to adults over the age of 40 with physical, and terminal, illness.

 

Qualified nurses are always on duty 24 hours a day, supported by well trained, experienced, care staff.

 

An in-depth assessment is undertaken prior to admission to ensure we are able to meet all the potential residents needs. Profiling beds and specialised mattresses are supplied as required.

 

As Dial House is also registered for terminal care, patients can be nursed in their final days with adequate pain control and all the medical equipment required for their comfort. The staff have specialist training in palliative care and are fully supported by the Macmillan Nurses. We have a plentiful supply of pressure relieving mattresses and cushions and other equipment as required.

 

Meals

 

Although there is a set menu, alternatives are always available. There is a four week rotation and this is changed every four months. A sample can be supplied on request. Residents are encouraged to use the dining room where possible, although they may take their meals in their room if preferred.

 

Patients valuables

 

There is a safe in Matrons office for patients to keep their small valuables in, although keeping objects of value is discouraged. Details of our insurance are available in the terms and conditions of admission.

 

Re-decoration generally takes place when a room becomes vacant and very rarely is it necessary to move a patient. No patient is ever moved without the relatives consent. In shared rooms, screens are always used to ensure patients privacy and dignity. There are also commodes available when/if required.

 

The front door is always kept open to the outside during daylight hours and is controlled by a coded access system to improve security. There is constant access to rear gardens for residents although the perimeter gates are generally kept locked. Dial House is not suitable for very mobile confused patients.
